NORDIK Institute at Algoma University conducts community-based research with a wide variety of community groups and Indigenous organizations. Under the direction of the Project Coordinator the Communications & Event Coordinator will support the development of a comprehensive communications strategy that will engage the broad diversity of Northern organizations currently providing support services to entrepreneurs and enterprise development, and provide linkages to resources for social enterprises and social entrepreneurs. Building on the strengths of Social Entrepreneurship Evolution (SEE) and other communication systems, s/he will assist the Northern Region Social Enterprise Collaborative in developing resources and connecting linkages that would contribute to the project’s outcomes, and provide organizational support to two events in the first year of the project.
Project Overview:
The primary purpose of the Northern Constellations project is to develop Northern Ontario’s infrastructure to enhance and expand the delivery of resources and services to social enterprises and social entrepreneurs. Using a collaborative model to address the geographic, linguistic and cultural diversity of the region, the project will create resources and spaces for partners to communicate, network, learn from one another and establish a sustainable organization. The network will identify and celebrate successful social innovation and social enterprises; share ‘promising practices’, and adapt methods and practices from other regions to Northern realities. The project will act as a bridge across the region’s diversity – Anglophones, Francophones, First Nations, and Northwest-Northeast, ‘near North’ and ‘remote’, urban-rural – and between the region and the rest of Canada regarding Social Enterprise development.
Responsibilities & Duties:
The Communications & Events Coordinator will build on SEE’s comprehensive bilingual communications strategy, as well as the strategies of the Collaborative’s partners, to support and facilitate linkages between and among Northern Ontario social enterprises/entrepreneurs and service providers. Under the direction of the Project Coordinator, the Communications & Events Coordinator will:
 Work with the Project Coordinator to establish communications to support the project and its initiatives.
 Build relationships of collaboration through face-to-face dialogue and collaborative learning.
 Develop promotional material (fact sheets and info-graphics) that communicates social enterprise/entrepreneurial resources to a variety of audiences including economic development practitioners
 Prepare and document media releases and coverage
 Attend training as required
 Provide leadership in planning, organizing and implementing events, including one conference for social enterprises/entrepreneurs from across Northern Ontario.
 Coordinate communication among partners, networks and community groups.
 Develop and manage website and social media content.
 Participate in NORDIK research team meetings.
Qualifications and Requirements:
The candidate will demonstrate strong communications and event organizing skills with some experience in Community Economic Development, Social Entrepreneurship, working with Indigenous peoples, Community Based Research, and/or Not-for-Profit Organizations. The candidate shall possess the following skills:
 Bilingualism (English and French) with experience translating documents in both official languages
 Excellent communications skills including written and oral skills in both official languages
 Experience using graphic design software, knowledge of website development, management and online media
 Networking and interpersonal skills
 Post-secondary graduate, ideally in Communications or equivalent
 Good interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment
 Strong organizational and time management skills
 Experience in event planning and organizing
Position Status: 35 hours/week; externally-funded 1-year position (with possibility of extension of up to 5 years); Bilingual
Location: Northern Ontario, Timmins preferred.
