Animating the John Rowswell Hub Trail
Community organizations have partnered with NORDIK Institute and the City of Sault Ste. Marie Planning Department in providing information regarding the rich historical, cultural and environmental ecosystems adjacent to the Hub Trail. The information, including healthy active living, will be widely accessible through a web portal, mobile devices, and a trilingual Trail Guide and Audio Tour. Graffiti Reframed
Graffiti Reframed is a one-year community engagement strategy that brings together a diversity of people and organizations in gaining a broad based understanding of graffiti by gathering perspectives of youth participants and the public. It investigates if building artistic capacity impacts youth identity, opportunities for engagement and employment in the creative economy, fosters community pride, place-making and tourism opportunities. It aims to track changes in attitudes about graffiti and those who produce it by understanding the forces driving creation and community attitudes toward it (e.g. crime, mischief, vandalism and/or art). Downtown Dialogue in Action
The John Howard Society, Sault Ste. Marie Police Services and NORDIK have partnered in creating a Strategic Action Plan for social development in the city’s downtown core by sharing ideas and experiences through dialogue on what is needed to create a safe, secure, and thriving downtown with an emphasis on including voices of marginalized groups. This project is funded through the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services’ Proceeds of Crime program and a grant from United Way’s Community Endowment Fund. Read more
SEE Collaborative – Social Entrepreneurship Evolution de l’entrepreneuriat social
A number of organizations and individuals across Northern Ontario will be working collaboratively in developing networks and tools needed for youth to launch social enterprises i.e. initiatives aimed to address social problems by utilizing business strategies. NORDIK and the North Claybelt Community Futures Development Corp are co-leading the three year Ontario Trillium Foundation funded project and invite organizations and youth interested in this field to join in. Social Enterprise for Northern Ontario (SENO) CoStarter for Change supports the development of early-stage, high-growth social enterprises in Northern Ontario by offering social entrepreneurs access to capital, educational and support programs, workspace, and other services to help launch and grow their non-profit and for-profit ventures. The Urban Indigenous Youth for Change (UIYFC)
The Urban Indigenous Youth for Change (UIYFC) pilot project will provide an in-depth opportunity to teach and learn from urban Indigenous youth how to incorporate cultural and land based learning with different types of entrepreneurship education, leading to increased and diverse participation in the social economy. Coalition for Algoma Passenger Trains (CAPT)
The Coalition for Algoma Passenger Trains (CAPT) is a regional not-for-profit organization composed of a broad variety of interests, including individuals, municipalities, First Nations, tourism operators, recreationists, environmentalists, students, community economic development professionals and accessibility groups who recognize the significant social, economic, and environmental value of Northern Ontario’s passenger trains.
